Tottenham Hotspur fans can’t believe that Mauricio Pochettino has defended Christian Eriksen’s form.
Per The London Evening Standard, the Spurs boss went to bat for the Denmark international, insisting that his commitment levels have not changed, despite his contract expiring at the end of the season.
He said: “The performance of Christian is not different from five years ago.
“His commitment is the same as five years ago. I’m happy with him. Sometimes we look too much at [whether] the players have four-year contracts or one-year contracts.
He added: “With Christian, I’m happy. When you compare with different seasons, he’s the same player. He had groin surgery after the Champions League final and internationals in the middle of June. Of course, it wasn’t the best pre-season for him.
“Like all the players, he needs time to find the best form. But commitment and the way he’s doing – of course, we expect more from every single player, who needs to improve – but I am happy with him.”
And fans have been left perplexed by Pochettino’s comments.
Indeed, Eriksen has scored twice and registered one assist in all competitions this season and turned in a poor performance at the weekend as Spurs drew 1-1 with Everton.
Throughout the 90 minutes, the Denmark international did not manage to have a shot on goal, nor did he complete a dribble, per WhoScored.
It was a similar story the weekend prior, as Spurs lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield; Eriksen had one shot on goal, was dispossessed on two occasions and notched a passing accuracy of just 59%. WhoScored gave him a rating of 5.9, the second-lowest of any Spurs player on the pitch, only behind Serge Aurier.
And supporters have questioned Pochettino’s defence of the 27-year-old.
