Even after their victory at Craven Cottage on Boxing Day, West Ham still need all the help they can get to avoid relegation this season. There have been many rumours floating around as to who the troubled club are going to purchase in order to escape from their current predicament, and it seems as if one of those rumoured to be journeying to east London, Steve Sidwell, will put pen to paper on a deal over January. Two players however, that also keep cropping up on the Upton Park transfer radar are Jamie O’Hara and Robbie Keane.
Although both would be nice additions to a side that desperately needs a revamp, West Ham need to weigh up the terms of their arrival, as one thing is certain; they will not come cheap. The most prevalent rumour seems to be a swap deal, involving Scott Parker going the other way, but I believe this would be a suicidal move. Parker has been inspirational for the Hammers, and even when he doesn’t play well, he motivates the team, and is a talismanic player in the centre of the pitch.
I believe both O’Hara and Keane could be useful signings for West Ham, but not at the expense of Parker. Keane would provide another facet to a strike-force which is very one dimensional at the moment, and O’Hara would bolster an injury-prone midfield, although he is struggling to return to full fitness himself. If the Hammers could secure the services of the Spurs duo without losing Parker, then I believe both Keane and O’Hara could make a big difference to a side which is in desperate need of some new faces.
The Irons are still in need of a pair of full-backs as well, and the rumours that Wayne Bridge could be on his way to the Boleyn Ground will be music to the ears of many supporters, even if it is only on loan until the end of the season. But the principal problem on the pitch, I believe, is West Ham’s inability to convert many of the chances they create, and this is the reason they find themselves in the position they are in. There have been far too many draws this season and if O’Hara and Keane are making the short journey across London without Scott Parker using their return, then I believe they will positively contribute to West Ham’s goalscoring threat, without substantially disrupting the team, and this can only be a good thing for the goal-shy Hammers.
