da leao: According to The Nottingham Post, Sam Byram is thought to be one of the loan players Nottingham Forest are looking to bring back for next season.
What’s the word?
It’s fair to say that Byram’s spell with Forest whilst on loan from West Ham this term has been a bit of a disaster. The defender was out for a considerable period of time with injury and has only just recently returned to the fold.
However, in the limited number of games he’s been back he has impressed. But should that be enough to convince Martin O’Neill to try and keep him at the City Ground? His manager certainly seems to think so.
The Nottingham Post is suggesting that Byram could be one of two loan signings that the club look to bring back next season after O’Neill made hints about their possible summer plans.
Byram signed for the club on loan in search of first-team football and is currently rated at £3.6m, per Transfermarkt.
Think about attack
Barring Joe Lolley, Nottingham Forest have lacked much creativity or nouse in attack in 2018/19. As such, their priorities this summer should be about bolstering their forward line, not the defence.
Considering Byram has been missing for much of the season, his loss next season wouldn’t be too much of a hindrance with the club still competing fairly well for the majority of the campaign without him.
Had it not been for their form in the penultimate month then they may well have found themselves in the play-offs. The former Leeds right-back would still be an astute acquisition but there needs to be a greater emphasis put on those influencing the action in the final third of the pitch.
Each side that finished the Championship season in the play-offs scored more goals than the Midlands-based club and if they’re to stand any chance of competing for those spots they’ll need to find someone who can add more in that area.
Forest actually finished the season with a solid defensive record, conceding less goals than Norwich, West Brom and Aston Villa. There lies the evidence.
