da wazamba: According to reports in The Telegraph, Newcastle United have joined West Ham United and Swansea City in the race to sign Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere.
What’s the word, then?
da dobrowin: Well, The Telegraph says that the Gunners have made the 25-year-old available for transfer this summer with a long line of injury problems looking to have brought his career at the Emirates to an end.
The England international spent last season on loan at Bournemouth, but he looks set for a permanent move away from Arsenal this summer.
The Telegraph says that the Magpies, the Irons and the Swans are all keen on Wilshere, who is valued at around £20m – although that asking price could come towards the end of the transfer window.
Toon Army manager Rafa Benitez is keen to strengthen his squad this summer as the club looks to avoid being in a relegation battle on their return to the Premier League next season, and the Spaniard has already signed Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune, Jacob Murphy and Javier Manquillo this summer.
How did Wilshere do at Bournemouth?
He did very well.
The spell with the Cherries was a chance for the 25-year-old to play regular football again and try and regain some form, and he certainly showed glimpses of his old self during his 27 Premier League appearances for the south coast outfit.
With two assists and having successfully completed 57 take-ons, Wilshere showcased his strengths and it is no wonder that he is attracting interest from other top flight clubs.
Would he be a good signing for Newcastle?
If he stays fit, he could be a massive signing for the Magpies.
Benitez will be keen to add some Premier League experience to his team this summer in order to help them ahead of the upcoming season, and Wilshere has that – and a huge amount of quality – in abundance.
The 25-year-old is comfortable on the ball and can dictate the play in the middle of the pitch, and that could be vital in what could be a tough campaign for the Tyneside outfit.
Is he worth £20m?
Considering he has one year on his contract and is not wanted, probably not.
However, that price is likely to come down later in the transfer window and while Benitez will want to get value for money, he could be tempted to make an early move for the midfielder to see off the competition from their rivals.
