The Hammers have been very clear about what they want for the coming season and the fans are enjoying the ride as the co-owners remain true to their word.
It’s time to forget the sniping about the new stadium (have you heard about that?), it’s all academic anyway, so look at alternative strikers for the east Londoners.
It is very apparent that they want a striker, or two, with preferably a leading name to go into the Olympic Stadium with. However, a star name is looking a difficult proposition, as West Ham are not a Champions League side and fall down the pecking order of preference when you consider the top four or five names in England.
Alexandre Lacazette has been widely mooted as a target, but after having a club record bid rejected by Lyon, it’s clear the Irons need to look elsewhere.
That’s not to say they won’t get there, but for now the Hammers could do worse than sign one or two of these FIVE talented forwards…
Wilfried Bony
At the turn of the year, Bony told Sky Sports that no player is happy sitting on the bench.
Fast forward six months, and the Ivorian’s mood cannot have improved very much. He started just 17 matches for City in all competitions last season, playing a cumulative total of 280 minutes of football from a possible 2070 in 2016. West Ham “had Bony bought for £8m and £40,000-a-week” in 2013, if you believe David Sullivan, only to watch him join Swansea instead. He’s likely to cost much more now, and, as is the case with many players, meeting his wage demands could be an issue for a club not playing Champions League football. He’s still a decent striker though and just wants to prove it.
Christian Benteke
Oh dear. It just hasn’t been good for the Belgian at Liverpool. He’s made more Premier League substitute appearances than starts, and scored just nine league goals all season. His Belgium national team-mate, Divock Origi, has leapfrogged him in the pecking order, as has the reinvigorated Daniel Sturridge, and that leaves Benteke staring at the abyss from the touchline. Apparently, West Ham are interested, but wages again could be a stumbling block.
Jonathan Calleri
According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, The Hammers are now well into talks with Argentinian Calleri over a move.
The 22-year-old attracted interest from the Hammers’ rivals Tottenham too, but Spurs’ swoop for Calleri appears to have collapsed. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were last month said to have reached a verbal agreement with his representatives, but Tottenham have now switched their interest elsewhere. As a result, West Ham are nearing the capture of Calleri, who is currently playing on loan at Brazilian club Sao Paulo from Uruguayan outfit Deportivo Maldonado. It’s reported that Calleri only needs to secure an Italian passport before a deal is set to be finalised.
Simone Zaza
It’s probably fair to say that if the two first choice attacking options are unachievable (Lacazette and Michy Batshuayi), then this striker, who was on West Ham’s radar last year, would be a good fit in the claret and blue.
The striker is about to kick-off the EUROs with the Azzurri, so any decisions will have to wait, but his season with the Old Lady seldom saw him start a game and he may well depart. According to Tuttosport, in an effort to secure a deal quickly West Ham are offering an impressive €30m for the Italian forward. The Bianconeri, however, would rather buy time, as much will depend on whether they are able to keep Alvaro Morata or whether they’ll have to return him to Real Madrid.
Nabil Fekir
Not a name widely known around the streets of Stratford and one that the fans will have fun with, but the underused Lyon forward’s status is on the rise in France after a number of top performances. The versatile forward was limited to just seven appearances last season after a knee ligament injury ruled him out for six months last September. However, Fekir still managed to fire home four goals in his handful of matches and Bilic may see him as the perfect man to complement his free-flowing attack.
Fekir, 22, was born in Lyon and made his way up through the ranks with his hometown club, before becoming a star with the French side last season and gaining full French honours.
