Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to react after Emre Can admitted that he turned down a move to Manchester United due to his Anfield links, before completing a transfer to Borussia Dortmund in January.
The 25-cap Germany international – who made 167 appearances for Liverpool – left Merseyside in the summer of 2018 after his contract with Jurgen Klopp’s side had expired, where he then joined Juventus on a free transfer.
However, after Maurizio Sarri left him out of the Italian giants’ Champions League squad, the former Bayern Munich man sought a move away from Turin, ending up at Dortmund in a deal worth £21m.
Can told German outlet Kicker that he didn’t consider United’s offer for a single second because of his past with Liverpool – of course, the Red Devils are rivals of the European champions and have been for many years.
In that respect, it is admirable that the midfielder still feels enough of a connection to his former club to not want to appear for their arch-rivals, although not every Liverpool fans on Twitter appreciates his act.
Let’s see what they’ve been saying about Can’s admission…
To kick off the reaction, these three supporters appreciated Can’s decision and called on fans to stop their dislike of the German.
After it was announced that he would be leaving for Juventus, a number of supporters on Twitter took aim at the 26-year-old, sending messages of hate towards him as they made clear that his relationship with the fanbase had been soiled.
However, that was perhaps unfair as all Can did was run his contract down before leaving on a free, as opposed to when Philippe Coutinho said he had a back injury and handed in a transfer request – a Brazilian doctor then revealed that he was in perfect condition to play.
A lot more suspicious and snaky than the manner in which Can left, without a doubt.
However, these three fans still failed to warm to the Germany international.
Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
One called him a “rat” while another branded him as an “overrated crab” – these comments seem extremely harsh, as Can has done nothing to disrespect Liverpool in any way while at the club and also after leaving.
Give him a break!
